Samsung Electronics, the world’s second-largest mobile phone maker, announced yesterday that sales of its Galaxy S smartphone have surpassed 10 million units in just seven months since its release.
The figure amounts to an average of 40,000 units per day, or roughly one device every two seconds.
Samsung said the Galaxy S reached the sales milestone faster than any other device the company has released, adding that it saw rapid acceptance both domestically and in international markets.
Consumers in Korea snapped up more than 2 million units of the Galaxy S, while sales amounted to 4 million units in North America and 2.5 million in Europe.
The phone has been sold in 90 countries and through 210 different service providers, including the four largest in the United States.
The Galaxy S is the eighth product - and the first smartphone - launched by Samsung Electronics to surpass the 10 million mark.
Samsung attributed part of the device’s success to localized marketing activities and the decision to get younger consumers involved in promotional efforts such as advertisement contests.
The company also modified the appearance of the phone for different markets to match the tastes of local consumers. In the United States, for example, the phone is offered in different shapes and names depending on the service provider.
Samsung released the Galaxy S in June, hoping to offer consumers an alternative to the iPhone, made by U.S. tech giant Apple Inc. Sales of the iPhone recently hit 1.8 million in Korea and more than 90 million worldwide. On the domestic front, the Galaxy S has been able to fight off the iPhone and take the lead in sales by a slim margin.
With the popularity of the Galaxy S surging, Samsung said it plans to release a new smartphone model soon.
